Honor is reportedly preparing a smart device with an extremely bright screen. Based on the latest leak, this device is said to have top illumination of up to 10,000 nits, a figure that is considered extreme for current smart devices.
This leak came from a leaker from China, Digital Conversation Terminal. He also said that apart from offering extremely high brightness, the unnamed smart device will also come with a battery with a capacity of 10,000 mAh.
However, there is an important note regarding the 10,000 nits claim. Smart device illumination figures are usually measured under certain conditions, not when the entire screen is active. So high numbers on paper don’t necessarily feel the same in daily use.
On an OLED display, maximum brightness can be achieved when only a small portion of the pixels are lit. This measurement method is known as APL or Ordinary Image Degree. The smaller the active screen location, the higher the illumination that can be achieved.
Therefore, the probability of the 10,000 nits figure being measured at APL is very low, for example only 1% of the screen is on. When used for surfing or watching video clips, the actual illumination is usually much lower.
So even though it sounds fantastic with top illumination reaching 10,000 nits, don’t expect the entire screen to be that bright when actually used. In fact, the unique fact is that the human eye cannot perceive a significant difference between 5,000 nits and 10,000 nits.
In the end, what is more important is not just the illumination number. Users need a screen that is efficient, doesn’t heat up quickly and saves battery. Do you yourself need an extremely bright screen like this?
