Manufacturer God of Battle: Laufey revealed that the video game was designed to bridge two different periods of the God of Battle franchise business, uniting classic and modern-day.
Not many business franchises have experienced a transformation as big as God of Battle. From the furious action video games and harsh battles of the Greek period to the more emotional and cinematic approach of Norse legends, Kratos’ journey over the past two decades has given birth to two identities that are equally beloved by his fans.
Interestingly, Sony Santa Monica Studios doesn’t seem to want to choose either of the two for its next project. After it was officially announced in PlayStation State of Play The latest, God of Battle: Laufey is actually positioned as a bridge that tries to unite the best elements from both periods.
This video game will put players in the role of Laufey, Kratos’ wife who has been mostly present in the background of the story. Through their adventures in the afterlife, players are said to see a side of the God of Battle universe that has never been explored directly in a video game before. The first announcement even received a special portion at the end of the State of Play presentation, showing quite long gameplay footage.
In a joint interview GamesRadar+ Video Game Manufacturer Ariel Lawrence explains that one of the main goals of the project is to combine the gameplay style of the classic God of Battle trilogy with the more serious narrative approach of the modern-day period. Lawrence, who was also involved as a writer in several previous God of Battle series, admitted that he always liked both approaches.
Therefore, he saw Laufey as an opportunity to find a balance between more agile and aggressive action with the depth of story that has become the hallmark of the franchise business in recent years. According to Lawrence, the biggest challenge this time is not just combining two different formulas, but ensuring that both can work in harmony without sacrificing the identity of the franchise business.
What do you think about the statement from the video game manufacturer? Is this mix of classic and modern-day styles the right direction for God of Battle’s future?
