The 17-inch Envy is a sleek desktop alternative with an aluminum body that matches the all-metal minimalism Apple popularized years ago. The 2017 refreshed laptop chassis has some minor changes since the previous version’s overhaul, including a slimmer and lighter chassis. The laptop isn’t made entirely of aluminum, but the silver finish on the plastic base pairs so well with the bare metal look of the lid and palm rest that you’d think it was. is not small at 16.4 x 11.1 x 0.92 inches and weighs 6.4 pounds.
However, it’s thinner and lighter than the previous Envy 17 (1.0 inches thick, 6.6 pounds) and weighs closer to the Dell Inspiron 17 7000 2-in-1 (16.2 x 10.9 x 0.9 inches, 6.2 pounds). No convertible design. The more affordable Dell Inspiron 17 5000 measures 16.7 x 11 x 1 inches and weighs 6 pounds.
Envy uses a drop-hinge design that lifts the laptop’s back end when the display is open, promoting better airflow for cooling and lifting the keyboard to a comfortable angle for typing.Lid Instead of an attached foot running along the back of the lid, the updated design integrates the folding hinge into the lid as a single piece.
The hinge is highlighted by a strip of polished metal that contrasts nicely with the matte finish on the rest of the lid.The drop hinge makes the Envy a little uncomfortable on your lap. However, due to their larger size, 17-inch systems are often used on tables and desks, so this is not a big issue.
Display – HP ENVY 17-j100 Notebook PC
Envy also features a beautiful 17.3-inch 4K display that offers bright, vibrant colors and crisp details. Watching the trailer for Atomic Blonde Full HD, the neon-soaked visuals glowed with blue and pink tones, while the creatively used stiletto heels rose bright red against the gray Berlin background.
This panel produces an impressive 209% of the sRGB color gamut. That’s up from the previous Envy 17 (111%) and Dell Inspiron 17 7000 2-in-1 (112%) and the affordable Dell Inspiron 17 5000 (98%).
Brightness is also top-notch, averaging 276 cd/m² measured on lab equipment. It’s brighter than the Dell Inspiron 17 7000 2-in-1 (246 nits) and the previous HP Envy 17 (252 nits), but not dramatically.
